At Recess, the space serves as a warm backdrop to the people within. As an intimate one-room venue, each patron is at the heart of the party every night. Deep, muted colors and quiet washes of lighting create a rare atmosphere that’s worlds away from Washington’s nightclub scene. Massive slabs of wood salvaged from a centuries old walnut tree anchor the space and are inviting to the touch while soft fabrics on deep banquettes line the walls. Recess takes its music seriously, and the DJ booth stands front and center in the room. A field of simple wood light boxes over the dance floor define the focus of the space and allow for wide variations in mood. By working with just a few materials and keeping the room small enough to stay personal, Recess will be a space that’s as inviting and friendly as its owners.  A DJ-centric venue, Recess brings the best DJs from all over the country. From LA’s DJ Homicide, to Miami’s Mr. Mauricio to Mick Boogie from New York, as music lovers ourselves, our goal is to expose DC to the most elite DJs in the country.
